Nondestructive Testing Methods

Three core methods, applied to surface and subsurface flaws across structural, pipeline, and pressure-vessel work. All methods performed independent of the fabrication chain.

SUBSURFACE METHOD

Ultrasonic Testing

Subsurface flaw detection in welds, base material, and thickness measurement. High-frequency sound waves locate cracks, lack of fusion, slag inclusions, and laminations beyond what visual inspection can catch. Suited to thicker sections and full-penetration welds.

Performed to

CAN/CGSB-48.9712

Magnetic Particle Testing

SURFACE METHOD

Surface and near-surface defect detection on ferromagnetic materials. Reveals cracks, seams, and discontinuities invisible to the naked eye. Fast, field-portable, and well-suited to fillet welds, fabricated connections, and forging or casting QA.

Performed to

CAN/CGSB-48.9712

SURFACE METHOD

Liquid Penetrant Testing

Surface-breaking flaw detection on non-porous materials — including stainless, aluminum, and other non-magnetic alloys where magnetic particle methods don't apply. High-contrast indication of cracks, porosity, and lap defects on machined and welded surfaces.

Performed to

CAN/CGSB-48.9712

Where Nondestructive Testing Fits

NDT methods chosen by application. The right method for your project depends on material, geometry, and what you need to find: surface, subsurface, or both.

Structural Connections

Ultrasonic Testing on complete-penetration welds at moment connections, splice plates, and column-to-base details. Magnetic Particle Testing on fillet welds, partial-penetration joints, and corner welds where surface integrity is the controlling concern.

Pipeline & Process Piping

Ultrasonic Testing on full-penetration butt welds, branch connections, and high-pressure runs. Magnetic Particle Testing on socket welds and surface-finish-critical joints. Coordinated with shutdown and tie-in windows where required.

Bridge & Heavy Civil

Ultrasonic Testing on plate girders, splices, and bolted-and-welded hybrid connections. Magnetic Particle Testing on stiffener welds and fatigue-prone details. Inspection scheduled around traffic, closure, and crane windows.

Shop QA & Field Repair

Liquid Penetrant Testing on machined surfaces and post-grinding repairs. Magnetic Particle Testing on shop-fabricated assemblies before delivery and on field repair welds before re-acceptance. Quick turnaround between repair cycles.
